Beneficiary of Financial Accounts
Make a legacy gift by naming Braille Institute as the beneficiary of a certificate of deposit, bank account, or brokerage account. You can also make Braille Institute a full, partial, or contingent beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Or sign over a fully paid policy, for which you may receive a tax deduction. Mutual fund investors can also name Braille Institute as a beneficiary in the event of the owner's death, and beneficiaries can be named for each fund.
Benefits of gifts of financial accounts
- Simplify your planning
- Support the causes that you care about
- Continue to use your account as long as you need to
- Heirs can instead receive tax-advantaged assets from the estate
- Receive potential estate tax savings from an estate tax deduction
How to make a gift of financial assets
To make Braille Institute a beneficiary of a financial account, you will need to complete a beneficiary designation form provided by the custodian of the financial institution. If you designate Braille Institute as beneficiary, we will benefit from the full value of your gift because these assets will not be taxed at the time of your death. Your estate will benefit from an estate tax charitable deduction for the gift.
Gifts of Insurance
A gift of your life insurance policy is an excellent way to make a gift to Braille Institute. If you have a life insurance policy that has outlasted its original purpose, consider making a gift of your insurance policy to Braille Institute. For example, you may have purchased a policy to provide for minor children and they are now financially independent adults.
Benefits of gifts of life insurance
- Receive a charitable income tax deduction
- If Braille Institute retains the policy to maturity, you can receive additional tax deductions by making annual cash gifts so that we can pay the premiums
- If Braille Institute cashes in the policy, you will be able to see firsthand how your gift supports our charitable work
- If we retain the policy to maturity, or you name us as a beneficiary, once the policy matures, the proceeds of your policy will be paid to our organization so that we can use the proceeds to further our charitable work
How to make a gift of life insurance
To make a gift of life insurance, please contact your life insurance provider, request a beneficiary designation form from the insurer, and include Braille Institute as the beneficiary of your policy.
Additional Information
You can also designate Braille Institute as a partial, full, or contingent beneficiary of your life insurance policy. You will continue to own and can make use of the policy during your lifetime. Your estate may benefit from an estate tax charitable deduction.
Your deduction for the gift of life insurance will depend on whether the policy has increased in value above the premiums and whether the policy is paid up or there are remaining payments to be made.
